Jump hosts (ProxyJump)

Reach the target through up to three bastion hosts in a row, just like ssh -J — on Windows, Android and in the browser; Termax picks up ProxyJump from your ~/.ssh/config when it imports it.

Port forwarding

Local (-L) and remote (-R) tunnels on Windows and Android, plus a dynamic SOCKS5 proxy on the PC; “Open web interface…” brings Proxmox, Home Assistant or your router into your browser through a tunnel. Tunnels are not possible inside the browser itself.

Telnet

For switches, routers and older devices without SSH — directly on Windows and Android, in the browser with an account through the gateway. Telnet is unencrypted, and Termax says so clearly in the editor and in the tab.

Serial (COM)

A console for Cisco switches, routers and microcontrollers on the COM port, preset to 9600 8N1 — on Windows, in the browser with Chrome or Edge, and on Android with a USB OTG adapter. The data never passes through a server.

On the PC, Termax reads ~/.ssh/config automatically; on Android you pick the file via “Import SSH config”. SSH agent auth requires a running SSH agent — which Android does not have. Serial on the phone needs a USB OTG adapter with an FTDI, CP210x, CH34x, PL2303 or CDC-ACM chip, on Linux the dialout group. Termax reads PuTTY sessions straight from the registry only on Windows, elsewhere from an exported .reg file. The Linux app stores passwords only with a keyring (GNOME Keyring, KWallet). iPhone (beta): terminal, SFTP, keys, jump hosts, Telnet, snippets and sync as on Android; no port forwarding, serial, dictation, two-factor login (keyboard-interactive) or SSH agent yet.

How do I sync SSH connections between PC and phone?

With the optional sync in Termax: you create a connection on your Windows PC and keep using it on your Android phone after signing in — and the other way around. The sync is end-to-end encrypted, voluntary and can be turned off at any time.

  • Zero-knowledge: the server only stores unreadable ciphertext (Argon2id + AES-256-GCM) and cannot see your content.
  • No strings attached: Termax works completely without sync and without an account — the sync is an option, not a requirement.
  • Byte-identical: a vault created on the PC opens unchanged on your phone.

Your connections belong to you.

No update, no sign-out and no account switch should ever cost you your server list. That is why your vault lives on your device, and you can take it with you at any time. In Termax an account is only a sync target, never a requirement.

  • The vault stays local: connections, keys and snippets are stored encrypted on your device. Termax works entirely without an account, too.
  • Signing out deletes nothing: after you sign out, everything is still there. If you sign in with a different account, Termax asks whether your local connections should be kept or replaced.
  • Encrypted backup, any time: export everything as a password-protected .termax-backup file, on Windows, on Android and in the browser, and restore it on any device.
  • Backed up automatically: the apps automatically create a local backup before updates, before the first sync and before every restore. You get it back under Backup → Import → "Automatic backups".

What others put behind a subscription is free in Termax.

Device sync, a file manager, tunnels or the serial console: depending on the vendor, some of that quickly ends up in a subscription or a pro unlock. In Termax all of it is part of the basics, for good, with no trial period and no ads.

Everything that exists stays free; only new things are sold. The only paid parts are two new add-ons in the optional Termax Premium: dictation and cloud sessions.

Phone gone, session keeps running.

With Termax Premium your SSH session keeps running as a cloud session on the Termax gateway for up to 24 hours, even after you close the app or the tab or lose your network. You pick up exactly where you left off, on any of your devices. On top comes dictation: speak commands and instructions instead of typing them. Everything else in Termax stays free.

Made for people who steer Claude Code or Codex from their phone, too: the agent keeps working in the cloud session while your phone is in your pocket. You dictate instructions, and the ⇧⏎ key in the key bar adds a line break without submitting the prompt.

  • Cloud sessions: the session keeps running for up to 24 hours, including everything the server printed meanwhile, and you continue it in the browser, on Windows, Linux or Android. Available for SSH connections to servers reachable from the internet, because the Termax server makes the connection. The gateway discards your credentials as soon as the connection is up (details).
  • Always as a cloud session: switch on "Always open as cloud session" in the connection editor, and the connection starts in the cloud right away in the app and keeps running without asking when you close it.
  • Continue locally: a cloud session has no file manager and no upload. One click on "Continue locally" connects the same connection directly from your device. If your shell runs in tmux on the server, you continue right there and the cloud session ends. Without tmux a new shell starts, and Termax asks what should happen to the cloud session.
  • One subscription, every device: unlock it once and it applies on Windows, on Linux, in the browser and on Android right away.
  • Dictation understands server vocabulary: sudo, apt, nginx, systemd and git come through as what they are — not as “pseudo apt”. The text lands in the command line for you to check; nothing is sent until you press Enter.
  • Nothing is kept: audio is processed only for recognition; neither the recording nor the text is stored or logged.
  • 300 minutes of dictation per month: a dictated command takes five to fifteen seconds — enough for hundreds of commands.

What our server sees – and what it never does →

    Keys leave your device only encrypted. Decryption happens locally only — without an account through the device protection (DPAPI/Keystore), with an account from your master password. The exceptions are the browser terminal and cloud sessions (Premium): there our gateway opens the connection for you.

    Argon2id + AES-256-GCM for the sync. The account vault is end-to-end encrypted — byte-identical on Windows and Android: a vault created on the PC opens on your phone.

    Host key verification against MITM. Every server key is recorded on the first connection; if it changes, the connection is refused.

What is an SSH client?
An SSH client is a program you use to open an encrypted connection to a remote server so you can control it from the command line or transfer files. Termax is a graphical SSH client for Windows and Android: you save your servers as connections and open a full terminal with a single click. Your credentials are encrypted locally on your device.
Is Termax free?
Yes. Saving connections, the terminal, the SFTP file manager, key generation, snippets, jump hosts, port forwarding, Telnet, serial and the optional end-to-end sync are free for good and will stay that way. You can also use Termax entirely without an account. How do I sync SSH connections between PC and phone?

Can I continue a cloud session directly from my device again?
Yes. In the Windows, Linux and Android apps you open a cloud session via Account → Cloud sessions → "Continue here". In the pane header, "Continue locally" then connects the same connection directly from your device, so the file manager, file upload and tunnels work again. If your shell runs in tmux on the server, Termax attaches to exactly that session and then ends the cloud session, so everything running comes along. Without tmux a new shell starts; a running SSH connection itself cannot move from one machine to another.
Can I bring my connections over from PuTTY or MobaXterm?
Yes. In the menu, choose "Import from PuTTY or MobaXterm…". On Windows Termax can read your PuTTY sessions straight from the registry; otherwise you pick an exported .reg file or the MobaXterm file (.ini or .mxtsessions). A preview shows what will be imported. Passwords are never read; you enter them on the first connect.
Are my SSH passwords and keys stored securely in Termax?
Yes. Termax stores passwords and keys encrypted through your system's key store — on Windows via DPAPI, on Android via the Keystore (hardware-backed), on Linux via GNOME Keyring or KWallet. Without an account, decryption stays tied to your device; with an account it is additionally derived from your master password. Your credentials therefore never leave your device unencrypted.
Is Termax GDPR-friendly?
Yes. Termax works completely offline, collects no telemetry by default and is developed in Germany. Your connection data stays local on your device; no third-party server is required. The optional sync is end-to-end encrypted, so no readable data leaves your device there either.
How do I create an SSH key (ed25519) in Termax?
In Termax you generate SSH keys with a few clicks directly in the app — either ed25519 or RSA. You need neither the command line nor ssh-keygen or PuTTYgen for it. The generated key is stored encrypted locally and can be used right away to sign in to your servers.
What is the difference between SSH and SFTP?
SSH is the encrypted protocol for remote access to a server, typically for the command line. SFTP is the file transfer that runs over the same secure SSH channel. Termax combines both: you work in the terminal and transfer files through the built-in SFTP file manager — in one app, without a separate program.
What does the host key warning on first connect mean?
On the first connection, Termax remembers the server's unique key (fingerprint). If it later changes unexpectedly, Termax refuses the connection — this protects you against man-in-the-middle attacks, where a third party impersonates your server. Host key verification is built in and makes sure you are really talking to your server.
Can I use Termax in the browser without installing anything?
Yes. On termax.app you open an SSH connection right in your browser via Quick Connect — without installing anything and without an account. You enter the host, username and password and immediately get a real terminal in the browser. For saved connections, the SFTP file manager and end-to-end sync, use the free app for Windows or Android.
Does Termax also run on Linux, macOS or iPhone?
Yes, on Linux Termax is available as an installable app (AppImage and .deb), just like on Windows and Android. Since November 2026 there is also a beta for macOS (.dmg for Apple Silicon and Intel) and an iPhone app for sideloading (.ipa, via AltStore or Sideloadly). The web app on termax.app also works on any operating system.
What does Termax cost?
Termax is free. The terminal, the SFTP file manager, key generation, snippets and the end-to-end sync are all available at no extra cost — and, if you prefer, entirely without an account. On top of that you can optionally subscribe to Termax Premium with dictation and cloud sessions (1.99 € per month or 19.90 € per year; every account gets 14 days of Premium for free, no payment details needed). Nothing that is free today moves behind that subscription.
Is Termax secure?
Yes. Credentials are encrypted locally (Windows DPAPI, Android Keystore or a Linux keyring), the optional sync is end-to-end encrypted (Argon2id + AES-256-GCM), and when connecting Termax verifies the host key against man-in-the-middle attacks. There is no telemetry by default, and Termax works offline. With Quick Connect in the browser, the connection runs through a gateway that works only in RAM and stores no credentials.
Can Termax connect to old Cisco switches and routers?
Yes. Since version 0.7.1 each connection has the option "Allow legacy algorithms (older devices)". With it, Termax also connects to devices that only support SHA-1 key exchange such as diffie-hellman-group1-sha1 and cause the OpenSSH error "no matching key exchange method found". The option is off by default and only applies to that connection. For devices without SSH there is Telnet, and the serial console (COM, preset to 9600 8N1) gets you onto the console port directly. Cause and fix in detail.
Does Termax use AI? Does an AI read my commands?
No. Termax never sends commands, terminal output, connections or credentials to an AI model, and nothing is trained on your data. The only exception is the optional dictation (Termax Premium): only when you tap the microphone, the audio goes to our service and from there to Groq (USA) for speech recognition. We store neither the audio nor the text. Details in the privacy policy (German).
